Our concept for the design of the Center of New North Carolinians is power of the square as well as hidden and exposed. We expressed these concepts through materials, furniture and lighting. Our goal is to make the immigrants feel welcome and comfortable.

For the office space we wanted to create a more personal, homey feel. We chose a dark carpet with natural colored bamboo furniture. A blue accent wall is located on the desk wall to add more color and break up the neutral walls. For lighting we used a square ceiling light, desk lamp as well as natural lighting. Clear story windows are also used in this space to allow more natural light and also to make the immigrant not feel so closed in.

The design for the conference space is to create a place functional for small groups of people. An 8'x6' natural bamboo conference table was chosen. The chairs are covered in a light colored print to add contrast with the bare walls and green accent wall. Shelving, dry erase boards and cork boards were placed in the space. Suspended lighting panel is used as well as the clear story windows.

For the reception area we used a walnut bamboo flooring to add contrast with the natural bamboo furniture. We chose sectionals, couches and chairs for visitors. Lots of natural lighting from six large square windows. Suspended panels are also used for lighting over the seating areas. For the reception desk we wanted it to feel welcoming but also different than anything else in the space. We chose to put a curve, obviously because it is not used throughout our design, and it is welcoming and guides you in a direction. On the curve we chose a corrugated metal to contrast the natural bamboo. Frosted glass is raised three inches to give the hidden and exposed look. The receptionist desk is lowered to give more privacy.

For my design of the CNNC building was to create a hidden and exposed design. From our many interviews with CNNC staff we learned that they were in need of large public spaces as well as private office spaces. Another factor I considered was that the immigrants did not like to be in enclosed spaces, it makes them nervous and uncomfortable. For my private spaces which were mostly the office spaces, I enclosed with ceilings at 11'-6". However the public spaces I either left completely open or used glass walls. Most all of the class rooms and conference rooms have a glass wall to make the space seem more open. There is also a glass arched ceiling over the class rooms and conferences rooms to tie in the arched vault as well as the exposed concept. I chose concrete flooring with the exception of carpet for the private offices. My choices of color I wanted to feel exciting, fun and inviting. I chose to use mainly neutrals with splashes of color using a light teal and a burnt orange.

In my design I know I want to keep everything very simple and functional with an easy flow. I also want to keep as much open as possible. In this stage I am still working on my color scheme and materials. However I know I want to use glass and concrete.

The architect Santiago was a huge influence in my design. The use of glass and arches really inspired me to incorporate that in my design as well.

Bauhaus was a hard advertisement to find. I chose this one mainly because of the geometric shapes and that it is not centered in the page.

The contemporary foods ad is an imitation of Andy Warhol which was an pop art artist. The lips of the mouth are the main focus.
The last ad is an advertisement for whiskey which reads like a comic book.

“Refresh”
“Renew”
“Relax”

Just by looking at this advertisement from TOTO, makes one feel ‘refreshed’, ‘renewed’, and ‘relaxed’. Your eye is drawn to the top, the word in deep blue, Refresh. Following the path of the rocks and fog, the viewer encounters the next word, Renew. Lastly the word Relax appears in the middle of an inviting bathtub. Known as the air bath, the viewer gets the sensation of feeling all three of those words in this one particular space, the bathtub. The composition gets the point across easily, as well as the text and how it follows the path.

This advertisement to me seems very successful yet very simple. Sometimes simple is better. Your eye first goes to the beautiful chair that basically fills the page. Noticing the book in the chair makes it feel inviting, ready for sitting with a book. You then observe McGuire written largely at the top of the page. The overall composition is simple but eye catching. Having the large photo of the desired product and designer is all that is needed to grab a potential buyer.

This Kohler advertisement reaches to a broader span of viewers. One side of the ad is a classy styled woman in a classy designed bathroom. The other side is a more bright, colorful, and sexy styled woman in a colorful bathroom. This shows the different personalities Kohler can appeal to. Text is absent from this ad with the exception of “THE BOLD LOOK OF KOHLER”. However, text is not needed. The ad speaks for itself. All the viewer has to do is choose simple or colorful!

Where and how did you meet your husband?
“I worked at a restaurant as a waitress because I wanted to learn English. Larry, my husband, was in the Marines and was stationed in Okinawa. After meeting me he became a returning customer, I was 21 when we met.”

How old were you when you got married and where was the location?
“I was 22 when I got married on June 20th 1963, in Japan. I had a traditional American wedding in Japan. My mother told me that when you marry someone, that is where you are going to die. Now we have been happily married for 44 years.”

What kind of jobs have you had?
“After we got married we moved to Beaufort, SC in November where I had my two girls. I did not work while the girls were little. But when they were in middle school, I had a part time job as a cafeteria worker in Colorado and Alaska.”

Have you always lived in Denton?
“Larry was a Marine for 7 years and then was in the Air Force, all together 23 years. We moved locations about every three years traveling with his job. I have been to South Carolina, Florida, Colorado and Alaska. Larry’s parents lived in Thomasville and we wanted to live close to them, we found some land in Denton and built our home.”

Were Larry’s parents welcoming?
“Yes, I stayed with Larry’s parents while he was stationed in Iceland. They were very proud of me. They thought I was a good housekeeper. A story about his mother and I started with the first meal we had together. I have never had nor heard of turnips, which was served at the dinner table. Larry’s mother asked if I liked them. Even though I thought turnips were not good I said they were. From then on she always made me turnips, which I have grown to love.”

Do you incorporate your native country into your American lifestyle?
“I cook Japanese food sometimes but I do not eat at Japanese restaurants because it is nothing like real Japanese food. Occasionally I make sushi however it is not all raw fish like everyone thinks it is. I enjoy singing Japanese songs at church also. I brought up my girls as American because I knew that we were planning to stay in the States. I did not want to force two languages on them. “

What were challenges you faced?
“It was very hard coming over here. I knew little to no English and was not well educated but Larry taught me a lot.”

What is your goal in life?
“My goal is to make the country better for everyone.”

What was one thing that kept you motivated?
“My Faith helped keep me motivated. I have truly been blessed!”

What is your fear when coming over to the States?
“My fear was not being accepted as an American and by Larry’s family.”

Do you keep in touch with your family?
“My father worked for a construction materials business (gravel, dirt, etc.) and because of the war, it went out of business and then he became a farmer. I was very close with my father until he started abusing alcohol and then we stopped keeping in touch. I had many brothers and sisters, two brothers and one sister were lost in the war. I still keep in touch with one sister and one brother today. Once I chose to marry Larry and leave my country, my parents disowned me.”

What were some items that you brought with you from Okinawa?
“I brought with me a kimono and a child’s pair of shoes. I ended up giving it away because I knew I would not have any use for it.”

Is schooling different in Okinawa then in America?
“Schooling in Okinawa consisted of classes running from 8 to 5, Monday through Friday and half a day on Saturday. We went to school 240 days whereas American children go for only 180 days; I was 16 when I finished school. I remember first thing in the morning, we would exercise for half an hour, as a requirement. I played volleyball, and I was a runner. We wore uniforms that were black or navy; girls were required to wear a pleated skirt with a blouse. Boys wore dress pants and a collared shirt. When Larry was in college, I recognized his schoolwork as what I did when I was in school.”

How did you feel when you first arrived in America?
“It was a major cultural shock, I was very surprised but I was determined to make it.”

Did you have any terrifying experiences while adjusting to the American culture?
“I was with Larry and his family celebrating Thanksgiving for the first time, after dinner I was helping his mother clean the table. I dropped a glass and pieces fell into the leftover turkey. His mother said that we would have to throw away the turkey just in case. I was terrified because I was only there for a couple of weeks and in my family, we would of never thrown away food. I was so sacred; I thought that she would hate me, I just did not understand.”

Any crazy experiences?
“I was at Larry’s parents home and wanted to clean up while his parents were at work. I wanted to clean the coffee percolator. Larry came in while I was washing it and said “you took all the flavor out of the coffee pot by washing it.” Thinking he was being serious. This really confused me as well as upset me, he finally told me he was only joking.”

To create a welcome mat for a Turkish immigrant to the United States, I tried to incorporate symbols that would remind them of home. I used the Turkish flag as one of my inspirations. The crescent moon is where the shape came from. The bright red star also came from the flag. My other inspiration came from Turkish tiles and quilts. They both were full of color and beautiful designs.

In today’s world of architecture and design, computers are highly relied on. What we as humans can not do on paper, we do on the computer or the computer makes it easier. Anything from communicating, shopping, researching, and things humans cannot even do.
Communication through computers has changed they way we think and design. Sending e-mails and video chats have made design process faster and possibly more reliable in some cases. Businesses can communicate by talking and by visuals instantly with clients that could be at far distances. Designs that are hard to do by hand are made easier done on the computer.
When referring back to the article that discusses the generations of design software and the improvements that have evolved, one can only imagine what the future holds. Starting with the first generation of computer-aided design with the large touch screen and stylus, that was not very accurate. Today we rely on computer-aided design to recognize mistakes as well as figure things that humans cannot do anymore because it is so complex.
As for using computers for design in the future is a definite. Computers are part of our everyday life now with cell phones, cars, and so on. At the rate of advancing technology, we soon will see computers taking over as they are beginning to now. Computers will be able to design alone. Buildings will be above and beyond our imagination. This could be a good thing as well as a bad thing. Bad as in resulting in the lose of designers themselves if computers become “designers”.

Connecting Back

Located in the Gatewood Studio Arts Building, the Close to Home exhibit is all about the modernism that takes place here in Greensboro, North Carolina. The idea behind the exhibit has to do with connection.

The use of materials, wood, steel, and glass were commonly used in modernism years ago such as in Mies van der Rohe’s work. The exhibit was built entirely of wood for the structure and metal for the backdrop of the information and graphics. Glass was already in the space but it work well with the exhibit giving it enough open feeling as did many of the house and buildings the exhibit was showcasing. Very dim and soothing lighting as well as natural colors with a pop of teal blue in certain places made you feel “close to home”. The connection of the information worked really well. Each board or picture would flow right to the next one. Being that this exhibit was a tribute the Loewenstien, everything connected back to him. There is several ways of receiving information in this exhibit. First and most used were typed boards and images. Some of the images were hand drawn and some were photos taken by someone. Other media consisted of videos and information on the computer. All the media connected well throughout the space. Even though the information and graphics and boards were interesting and nice to look at, the video was a great way to get information across.

The video took the viewer through a virtual house, Loewenstein home. It let the viewer feel as if they were actually there and experiencing the amazing architecture in his home. The computers were the least successful in working throughout the space. They were not really needed being that the rest of the exhibit was so informative and creative.
When entering the exhibit the first thing I noticed were the tall structures that contained the information. I then look closer to the how well the information was transmitted on the structures and walls. I find myself just walking and reading going were ever my eye leads me next.

1. This course has opened my eyes to design. Before I would have only noticed if it was a pretty building, space or object. However by taking this course, I notice whether the building, space or object is well designed and useful for the everyday life. I think to myself, is it a safe place or object, what is its purpose, is it functional and so on. By taking this course I have a better understanding and appreciation for design and all aspects of design. When designing for projects now and for later tasks, I have the knowledge of different characteristics I may incorporate in my own design.

2. Le Corbusier is a well-known designer and architect. He is best known for his modern outlook on design and protecting the environment. One of his most famous is Villa Savoye. Modernism can be seen all throughout the building. It is free of a structure frame. Bands of windows wrap around the structure to allow as much natural light possible. The building does not sit on the ground, which allows for an open area that is covered for outdoor functions and is weather protected. The roof is where the actual landscape appears. This is where green design comes into play. We as designers and architects still are trying to bring modernism and green design to the world. Slowly but surely it is making its way to a new way of designing for the 21st century.

3. Even though we seem to always turn back to the past when it comes to designing, there are innovative methods to all past designs. Today, the big “thing” is going “green”. With green products one can get recycled products that sometimes feel but definitely look like the real thing. Hardwood floor is a good example. Real hardwood floor is bad for the environment by depleting natural resources. By using recycled hardwood floor there is less tree’s that are cut down. Although “going green” is great for the environment, not everyone is so keen on it. Changing the way a person lives or does something is a very difficult undertaking. People today still do not accept change very well. But when a new idea comes about such as “going green” it takes years for people to understand and appreciate what has been done and or will do.

4. Educations in the 1950’s and the 1960’s have had a large influence in the way students are educated today. During the 50’s and 60’s disabled children were allowed to attend school. Currently, they are allowed in public schools and treated like any other student. Desegregation was just beginning in the 50’s and 60’s allowing African Americans to attend the same schools as white children. In today’s world one may see many different races in a school. Back then more people were starting to attend school. The GI Bill had been created allowing veterans to attend college paid by the military. Today this still stands and even more people are attending college. In college today age, race, or gender does not matter.

With all the many charrettes, project analysis, and researched artists and so on, I have progressed in understanding and designing of My Sister's House. The charrettes are small but helps me as well as my team to gradually progress in our design. The project analysis have helped me to progress as well. They allow me to see what I have done wrong, missed or need to improve on. It is always best to have other opinions. The researched artist have allowed my team and I to see many ways of design in our decade. There is sculptors, painters, fashion designers, architects and more. They each have characteristics that we took to inspire they way we wanted My Sister's House to look and feel. Our inspirations were mainly shapes, color, community, comfort and embracing.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Our goal for my sister’s house is to allow the design to provide a welcoming, calming, and safe atmosphere while encouraging a positive outlook on life.

Today is my first day visiting the shelter where I’ll be staying for a while.
I’m excited and nervous at the same time.
Okay, I’m here and the place looks really nice from the outside.
It’s a uniquely constructed building, unlike the other plain shelters I’ve seen.
It’s time to see what the inside is like.
I walk into the lounge area and am overwhelmed with the sensation of being at home.
The room is suited perfectly for my son and me.
He points out how cool the recycled blue jean couches and curtains are.
He wants to take the pair he has on and make something with them.
I ask him if we could wait until he grows out of them, that shouldn’t take long.
I appreciate how resourceful they are by reusing the jeans; maybe they could let me in on a few tricks.
As we stroll into the kitchen my eyes are drawn to some very attractive cabinets.
I’ve never seen cabinets like these before.
They look like glass but feel more like plastic and they seem to have been dyed in a ray of beautiful colors.
This room is already one of my favorites,
it instantly raised my spirits.
There’s also fencing hanging horizontally from the ceiling used to hang pots and pans,
another resourceful idea.
Next we go into an office area,
another one of my favorites.
The room is sectioned off into private areas by using these dividers that look and feel a lot like the cabinets in the kitchen.
The dividers open and close by simply pulling them one way or the other.
This room will be perfect for when I need to do my schoolwork.
I’m about to be starting high school so I’m sure I’ll have a lot.
Finally I make my way over to our room.
It’s very nice and already has a few decorations.
There are several lamps hanging that are made from that same plastic-glass material I saw earlier in the kitchen and office.
They’re so cute and look like they came straight out of the 50s.
This place is amazing and I’m so blessed to finally have a place for me and my son to call home.
